Statistics That Should Shock You

Here are some recent statistics from the CDC that should alarm you and hopefully empower you to check on the important and maybe the random person in your life to ensure they are not included in these numbers.

  • 1 in 4 women aged 50-74 have not had a mammogram in the last 2 years
  • Black women who are uninsured and have low incomes are more likely to die from breast cancer
  • 3 in 10 women aged 50-74 who have 3 or more health-related social needs have not received mammograms
  • Black women have the highest rate of death from breast cancer compared to other ethnic groups at 40%
  • Black women with dense breasts under the age of 55 are more likely to be diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer
  • Black women have breast cancer diagnosed at a more advanced stage than other ethnic groups

Some of these statistics have valid explanations I have covered in past blog posts, but the needle is not moving enough for Black women. Let’s double down on our early detection, Breast Self Exams, and breast screenings so we can all survive this disease. The first step is arming yourself with facts and then talking to your loved ones. Direct them to my blog for info and let’s fight together.

I’m Cynthia

Welcome to Melanin & Pink Ribbons: A Blog for Black Women Fighting and Surviving Breast Cancer. It was born out of my personal journey as a patient not seeing very many images of women who looked like me fighting this disease. So, when I became a survivor, I did something about it. This is a space to learn and become empowered with information so we as a community can thrive into survivorship.
