What Is a Port Pillow and Why Black Women Should Know About It

If you have a chemo port, everyday things can suddenly hurt. Car rides. Seatbelts. Simple pressure on your chest. A port pillow is a small cushion that attaches to your seatbelt and sits between the belt and your port. It’s not fancy. It’s practical. And it can make a real difference.

For Black women going through breast cancer treatment, comfort isn’t a luxury. It’s part of survival. A port pillow helps reduce pain, irritation, and anxiety when you’re already carrying enough. It protects a sensitive area and gives you one less thing to brace for when you get in the car. It’s a small tool, but it sends a big message: your comfort matters. Your body deserves care. Sometimes healing looks like advocating for yourself in the smallest, smartest ways—and a port pillow is one of them.

This photo is intended to provide a clear view of the item, but it can be adjusted to suit your comfort by placing the cushion where you need it.

Welcome to Melanin & Pink Ribbons: A Blog for Black Women Fighting and Surviving Breast Cancer. It was born out of my personal journey as a patient not seeing very many images of women who looked like me fighting this disease. So, when I became a survivor, I did something about it. This is a space to learn and become empowered with information so we as a community can thrive into survivorship.
