The Five W’s of a Breast Biopsy

Who can have a breast biopsy is simple? Any one with a breast female or male can be subject to this procedure.

What is a breast biopsy? “A breast biopsy is a procedure to remove a sample of breast tissue for testing” according to the Mayo Clinic Patient Care and Health Information website published September 18, 2021.

When is it performed?

  • After a mammogram, sonogram that shows a suspicious area
  • A lump is detected by you doctor during a clinical exam or you during a Breast Self-Exam/BSE
  • Signs of discharge or dimpling of the surface of the breast

Where is the procedure performed? In a hospital or surgical center setting with proper medical staffing is where the biopsy can be performed.

Why is the biopsy necessary? A medical professional determines after reviewing test results and or a clinical exam you warrant further examination. The suspicious mass must be tested to see if it is benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous).
