Synthetic Hair, Black Women & Cancer

Most braiding hair sold in beauty supply stores is synthetic and made from a type of plastic called kanekalon or toyokalon. Some synthetic braiding hair contains harmful chemicals known as carcinogens, which are substances that can cause cancer after long or repeated exposure. These chemicals are often found in:

  • The coating of the hair to keep it shiny and smooth
  • The plastic fibers used to make the hair
  • The preservatives or dyes used in manufacturing

The main concern is exposure through skin contact or inhalation when installing or wearing the hair, especially if it’s heated (like during styling or hot water dipping).

Research studies (including ones from the Silent Spring Institute and National Institutes of Health) have found that synthetic braiding hair can contain endocrine-disrupting chemicals and carcinogens, such as:

  • Flame retardants (like TDCIPP and TCEP)
  • Phthalates (plastic softeners known to disrupt hormones)
  • VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds) that release toxic fumes

These chemicals have been linked to breast cancer, hormone disruption, and respiratory issues, particularly in Black women who are the largest users of synthetic braiding hair.

Repeated exposure to the harmful chemicals in synthetic hair may cause:

  • Scalp irritation or burning
  • Rashes or itching on the neck, shoulders, or scalp
  • Breathing issues or asthma flare-ups during or after installation
  • Hormone imbalance (like irregular periods, weight gain, mood swings)
  • Long-term cancer risk, especially breast or uterine cancer

Because we use these products most often and for long periods, the health risks for us can be higher.

There is good news. Some brands are now offering non-toxic, safer options. Look for pre-rinsed, flame-retardant-free, or natural fiber options. Here are a few safer brands:

✅ Rebundle – Plant-based, non-toxic braiding hair made from banana fiber
✅ Latched & Hooked – Pre-washed, non-toxic, synthetic hair
✅ The Hair Laundry Co. – Offers pre-cleansed and low-tox options
✅ Nuele Hair – Focuses on clean beauty and non-toxic ingredients (more for hair care, not extensions, but still helpful)

To protect yourself and make smarter choices when using traditional synthetic hair, do the following:

  • Pre-rinse synthetic hair in apple cider vinegar and water to remove chemical residue
  • Let hair air out of packaging before installing
  • Avoid heating synthetic hair near your face or breathing in the steam
  • Wear hair for shorter periods and give your scalp a break

We deserve beauty without harm. Knowing what’s in your hair is part of protecting your health, hormones, and healing journey.

Welcome to Melanin & Pink Ribbons: A Blog for Black Women Fighting and Surviving Breast Cancer. It was born out of my personal journey as a patient not seeing very many images of women who looked like me fighting this disease. So, when I became a survivor, I did something about it. This is a space to learn and become empowered with information so we as a community can thrive into survivorship.
