Do’s & Don’ts for Giving Gifts to Breast Cancer Patients

We all want to demonstrate our affection and support for breast cancer patients. There are a few items that sound like normal gift giving that should be avoided.

Don’t give live plants or flowers

Often flowers and plants have bacteria and fungus that can be problematic to patients receiving chemo who have compromised immune systems.

Do give silk flowers, glass flowers or handmade paper flowers.

Don’t give scented self care items

Lotion, hand cream and lip balm are good gifts but search for unscented versions. When undergoing chemo or radiation the nose becomes extra sensitive so avoid these if you can.

Do Give unscented self care items such as lotion & hand cream

Don’t buy balloons

Latex or Mylar balloons can trigger an allergic reaction so its best no to give either of these.

Do give a sentimental picture or inspirational piece of artwork

Do give warm fuzzy socks

Do give soft scarves

Do give a silk or satin pillowcase

Do give comfy pajamas and or a robe

The most important thing is knowing your loved one and what they like. Thoughtful giving from the hear never leaves you to a bad place.

Welcome to Melanin & Pink Ribbons: A Blog for Black Women Fighting and Surviving Breast Cancer. It was born out of my personal journey as a patient not seeing very many images of women who looked like me fighting this disease. So, when I became a survivor, I did something about it. This is a space to learn and become empowered with information so we as a community can thrive into survivorship.
