How To Care For Your Scalp During Chemo

It is not as simple as cutting off all your hair and then doing nothing else to your head and scalp. Professionals suggest you don’t go all the way to the scalp, leave a bit of hair similar to peach fuzz on your scalp. Going to the scalp can cause ingrown hair and who needs that on top of chemo?

There is an entire sub-industry out in the cancer care industry that caters to the side effects of chemo and particularly hair loss. My recommendation is to proceed slowly and ask around family and friends who have been where you are or where you’re going in this breast cancer journey.  I can share some basics for you to be aware of and consider curated by headcovers.com:

  • Use warm water to wash your scalp
  • Use natural products for shampooing your head and scalp, the fewer chemicals the better
  • Try natural oils for your scalp
  • Protect your head from the sun
  • Wear a bonnet or scarf at night to protect your scalp
  • Stay hydrated
  • Be aware of blasts of heat such as opening a hot oven

Overall be protective of your hair and use natural products and less is more. Follow your instincts and remember this is temporary and shall pass. You are beautiful inside and out and your beauty is not defined by your hair!!!!

Welcome to Melanin & Pink Ribbons: A Blog for Black Women Fighting and Surviving Breast Cancer. It was born out of my personal journey as a patient not seeing very many images of women who looked like me fighting this disease. So, when I became a survivor, I did something about it. This is a space to learn and become empowered with information so we as a community can thrive into survivorship.
