Merriam -Webster defines insomnia prolonged and unusually abnormal inability to get enough sleep due to trouble falling asleep or staying awake. It is a common complaint among active patients and survivors. I know firsthand how insomnia can bring havoc to your daily life, I experienced insomnia during and after my radiation treatments and it was very hard to get past. Personally, I found relief in varying degrees of sipping chamomile tea, melatonin, and the use of a sleep app. My case subsided very slowly but it was also complicated being in menopause.
Susan G Komen suggests combating insomnia during treatment with the following tips:
- Reduce Stress
- Use Melatonin
- Turn off outside stimulants such as tv, computer, tablet & phone
one hour before bed allowing yourself to decompress
Survivors can try:
- Acupuncture
- Mindfulness Meditation
- Tai Chi
- Yoga
It’s important to remember that some breast cancer drugs can cause insomnia and breastcancer.org recommends:
- Not Taking A Nap
- Exercise to Tire Out the Body
- Only Use Bed/Bedroom to Sleep not Lounging
- Read Before Bed
- Avoid Alcohol
- Cut Back on Caffeine
