Hair loss is a side effect of chemotherapy treatment. As women who are socialized that our hair is our crowning glory and much of our beauty is measured by our hair, hair loss can be devastating and crippling to self-esteem at a time when defenses are weak. Hair loss can be experienced all over the body.
Research has shown that the use of cooling caps can reduce up to 50% of hair loss. A cooling cap is a head covering that has tubes of a very cold liquid put on the lady’s head. Further research is being done as to the effective length of time to wear this cap and the number of times to see results. It is a promising treatment that hopefully continues to yield positive results.
When one is experiencing hair loss wigs, scarves, and hats can all be used to make us feel better at a time when we need it most. Another good thing is hair can begin to grow between 1-2 months after treatments ends. The hair may be a different texture, color and thickness but it returns! Although it is becoming more fashionable to be bald, it is truly an individual choice. The most important thing to keep in mind is to be comfortable and confident as possible! Whatever works for you is the right thing. Stay positive and stay beautiful!
