Signs of Breast Cancer on the Skin

It is so important we look at our bodies, especially our breasts. There is a cultural taboo about the sexual organs of our bodies. This is a narrative that has been dictated by society and proliferated throughout our community. This false account can cost you your life! No longer can we afford to be passive about our health.  You are always your first line of defense when it comes to your body.

Do you know the signs of breast cancer on the skin? According to cancercenter.com they include:

  • Swelling in the breast or armpit
  • Discharge from the nipple
  • Dimpling of the skin
  • Nipple turns inward
  • Lump or thickness in breast or armpit

The Center for Disease Control goes further and denotes

  • Redness on the skin
  • Flaky skin
  • Pain of any kind in the breast

So, when you are doing your BSE (Breast Self-Exam) on the same day each month make sure to look for these, and if you see any of them follow up with your medical professional right away. Early detection saves lives!

Welcome to Melanin & Pink Ribbons: A Blog for Black Women Fighting and Surviving Breast Cancer. It was born out of my personal journey as a patient not seeing very many images of women who looked like me fighting this disease. So, when I became a survivor, I did something about it. This is a space to learn and become empowered with information so we as a community can thrive into survivorship.
